Youkai Watch Episode 34

Here we go, another episode! Managed to get two out this week despite Bravely Second calling my name haha. Also, I’ll continue the name meanings, and I think this time it might be good to take a look at them since there’s two lines that practically beg for a TL note.

Youkai Watch 34 @ nyaa

First in this episode is Hitomakasen’nin. In Japanese, his name is written ひとまか仙人. As a phrase, this means “to have a person (someone else) do it”, thus what his affect is. The 仙人 part of his name can mean “immortal mountain wizard”, which is a taoist concept where a monk typically goes to the mountains and forgoes all their earthly desires.

Next up, Zekkouchou. This one’s name is written ぜっこう蝶, in hiragana and kanji. 蝶 means “butterfly”, thus this youkai’s form. In this youkai’s case, “zekkouchou” becomes 絶好調, which means “to be in top (perfect) form”, thus its affect on Kanchi. I used proper capitalization for this since it’s in hiragana.

Finally, we have ZEKKOUchou, whose name is written ゼッコウ蝶. Again, 蝶 means “butterfly”. As noted in the episode, this youkai’s name is different from Zekkouchou only in that it’s written using katakana and kanji. In this youkai’s case, it focuses on just “zekkou”, 絶交, which means to end an relationship (friendship) with someone, thus this one’s affect. Since its name uses katakana, when in text form, “zekkou” will be in caps for this youkai’s name.

And yes, I know I didn’t do the typesetting for the part where Whisper explains the different between Zekkouchou and ZEKKOUchou, but I really was not up for frame-by-frame clipping of lines. :V
